Monday, June 17th, was a spectacular day, as the art community gathered at The Mariners’ Museum and Park for a preview of the Starfinder sculpture, coming to the Tech Center Drillfield this August. The Starfinder, created by artist Owen Morrel, is inspired by the marine navigation tool the astrolabe. Morrel was introduced by Jeff Stodghill and gave the audience a look into his creative process, revealing that his connection with maritime inspiration dates back to summers spent on a fishing boat with his father.
The event featured speeches by Mayor Phillip Jones, City of Newport News‘s Director of Development Florence Kingston, Newport News Public Art Foundation‘s Jeff Stodghill, W. M. Jordan‘s Executive Chairman John Lawson, Artist Owen Morrel, and Mariner’s Museum President Howard Hoege.
A heartfelt thanks to our speakers and partners, who made this event truly unforgettable.
